Sorting out your website

June 29, 2008

The best place to start when optimizing your website is at home.

The home page that is.  Actually starting with the entire site itself is the best bet when first jumping into the SEO game.  Lots of sites have been online a long time with little or no attention to how the website itself is structured.

So you need to sort your site out.  What I mean by this is taking an objective look at the content within your pages.  Grab a piece of paper and a pencil and open your home page in your browser.  Start making an outline of the page and the topics you cover there.  You might be surprised to find a giant hodge podge of different keywords and key phrases.  It’s likely that you or the person that constructed the site was trying to get a super mix and grab several listings relevant to your product or services back when the site was first built.

But that’s not the best method today.  The best method today is to stay super focused on each page.  Covering a specific key phrase on each.  It’s probable that your site is going to need some new pages, but that’s what your outline is about to reveal to you.  If you are honest when making your site outline, you’ll likely find that you need several new pages added to your site.  Each focusing more on a specific product or service your website sells.

This is one way to garner more search engine traffic.  By adding new pages that are more targeted you are optimizing your site to grab more listings overall.  The added bonus is that your traffic will convert better in most cases because your traffic is much more targeted.  If they don’t have to make more clicks to get to what they want to buy, then they buy more often.  They found what they are looking for, so if your content is focused, AND has good sales ability, you’ll close more sales.

So sort your website out.  Map out your optimization plan and you will rank better for more terms.  It’s the logical place to start.  It’s the right place to start.

Blogging for more traffic

June 28, 2008

Traffic, everyone wants it, every business website needs it.

So you built a website and took your company online.  But after the grueling design process, all you had was a pretty website, with little or no visitors.

It happens all the time folks, don’t feel like you’re all alone in this.  People build websites with extreme expectations of good search engine performance right from the start.  Most of the time they simply expect that the web designer did the fantastic job they told them they would.  Which in many cases, it’s likely that they did design a decently optimized site for you.  The problem is that a four page wonder of a website is not enough in today’s competitive search ranking battles.

That is unless you have a topic that is as untouched as lunar real estate.  Odds are this is not the case.  Odds are you have competitors and you need to fight your way to the top of your market.

So you do a little research and learn about content.  More specifically, you learn that your website really needs fresh content.  Content that is added regularly so that the search engines can see your website growing gradually.  Becoming a resource in their eyes and in the eyes of your users.

You realize you need a blog.  And you’re right.  You do.

Blogging is the secret to getting more listings in the search engines, thus, more traffic for your website.  More focused, search engine traffic that is.  The visitors that are actually looking for the products, looking for the services that you and your company provide.  The proverbial golden goose.

Yes, blogging can do this for your site.  It can bring in much more traffic and build a solid user base that can last.  But you have to be committed to your blog and you have to stay committed to it.  For a blog to work the content magic on your search engine rank, you need to consistently make the effort.  Each and every day if possible.

So if your website is suffering for traffic and you don’t have a blog, get one.  In very little time you’ll see that it’s the traffic miracle you’ve been looking for.
